The law provides a right for people to select their names as long as the name change is not being done for fraudulent purposes.  There are many reasons why you may want to change your name.  Some reasons include the following:

  • Your legal documents may not match (which is required to obtain your enhanced license)
  • You may be the victim of domestic violence
  • You may wish to pay tribute to someone or something
  • You may not like the way your name sounds
  • You may be named after someone you do not want to be associated with
  • You may have had a falling out with your family
  • You may have had a sex change
  • You may identify as other than what your name signifies
  • You may feel that your name has a stigma to it

In order to obtain a name change you will need to petition the Court in the County in which you reside and provide a copy of your birth certificate.  If the Court grants the application, you will then need to file it in the County Clerk’s Office and obtain certified copies.  If there are safety concerns, this office can advocate for the record to be sealed.

Parents of a child can petition for name changes for their child. If only one parent is petitioning the Court, the other parent must consent or proper notice must be given to the non-petitioning parent.  If that parent objects our office is prepared to argue to the court that there is no reasonable basis to deny the change. We will do our best to illuminate the court why the name change is in the best interests of the child and should be granted.
